History
Humboldt County was formed within 1853 from parts of Trinity County.

A county derived its title from either Humboldt Bay, which was entered by a sea otter hunting party around 1806, but was non rediscovered until 1849. Within 1850, Douglas Ottinger and Hans Buhne entered the bay, naming it Humboldt within honor of the dandy naturalist & globe explorer, Baron Alexander von Humboldt.

A metropolitan area about Humboldt Bay was another time entirely inhabited per Wiyot Indian tribe.
